Before requesting a commission, please read this page in its entirety to fully understand the following:
All pencil art portraits are framed in 22" x 26" distinctive black gallery wall frames with
thick glass fronts. Hanging hardware is pre-attached. The pencil art is
drawn on paper and art board sizes 16" x 20".
Black and white portraits are drawn with graphite pencil on 100% cotton fiber, acid-free paper.
Color portraits are drawn with color pencil on textured, acid-free art board. Swarovski crystal designs can be incorporated.
You provide an Art to Inspire Message as inspiration for the artist. The Message can be a story, song, poem, quote, etc. If you wish, we can create one for you. Learn about Art to Inspire Messages
A signed certificate of authenticity with your Art to Inspire message is printed on archival paper, laminated, and adhered to the back of the frame.
STEP 1: PROVIDE US WITH PHOTOGRAPHS - Portraits
are drawn from photographs provided by you. You are
encouraged to provide one main photograph and two additional photographs
of the subject as inspiration for the artist. At a minimum, the main
photograph should be provided as an 8" x 10" high quality print or as a
digital file with a resolution of 300 dpi. Email the photographs to
info@kevinjohnsonart.com.
Avoid Selfies: The best quality photographs are taken at a distance of at least 4 ft. in proper lighting with a camera. Selfies taken with mobile devices often result in photographs with certain parts of the face appearing larger.
Step 2: Describe your vision - Collaborate with Kevin on your conceptual design on a phone conversation. Describe
your vision and Kevin will provide you with suggestions for the
creation of a unique, personalized portrait. To get started, call us at

Waiting List: If you are informed of a waiting list, your work will start on or near the estimated date that you were given.
Step 3: Provide us with your inspirational story, song, poem, or quote -
You provide an Art to Inspire Message as inspiration for the artist. The
Message can be a story, song, poem, quote, etc. If you wish, we can
create one for you.
STEP 4: PLACE YOUR ORDER WITH A 30% DEPOSIT - Confirm your final vision and place your order. A 30% deposit is due at
the time of ordering. This 30% deposit is non-refundable and will be applied to the final price of the commission. The expected completion
date will be confirmed when you place your order.
Step 5:
Delivery and Final Balance - The
completion time is approximately 4-6 weeks. This is an investment for you as the client and should not be rushed. We value each piece of artwork we create and strive for the highest quality. Please understand that we are creating multiple artworks at a time.
Delivery: Portraits are delivered in-person in the Washington DC metro area in a common location near you. We would like to take photos of you with your portrait to share on our social media and website, if possible.
Shipping: For orders outside of the Washington DC metro area, please contact us to discuss Packing and Shipping costs via FedEx.
Final Balance: The final balance is required at the time of delivery (or shipping).
Step 6: Social Media and Website Posts - We would like to share your portrait and photos on our social media and website. Before doing so, we will request your permission via email.
Share Photos and Testimonials: Nothing warms our hearts more than to see our portrait hanging on the wall in your home. Please provide us with photos to share along with testimonials.

So your portrait will last a lifetime, your portrait has been finished with UV protection. For additional protection, do not place your portrait in direct sunlight. LED indoor lights are recommended.
Kevin Johnson Art aims to capture inspiration and passion within each portrait.
Clients provide Messages (along with their reference photographs and vision) as inspiration for the portrait.
Those Messages (e.g., stories, songs, poems, quotes) are adhered to the back of the portrait as a secret keepsake.
We can provide you with a Message, if you prefer. Messages can also be hung on the wall beside the portrait in a decorative display.
Write about what the person was thinking at the time the photo was
taken. Describe the location or event.
Share an excerpt from the
person’s favorite book, speech, movie, or song. Write a poem.
Use your imagination in order to create a personalized portrait that inspires all who have the opportunity to see.
